Girls Spar FAI 5-A-Side Soccer Team

The girls from 2nd to 6th class participated in the Spar FAI 5 - a - side soccer competition in Shiven Rovers FC, Newbridge this week. They preformed really well, working very hard for one another with tremendous team spirit. It was a very enjoyable experience with one victory, one draw and one defeat. More importantly however was the attitude the team displayed. Well done girls.

Liam MacCarthy Visits Kilrickle

Last Wednesday Kilrickle National School was delighted to welcome the Liam MacCarthy and the Irish Press Cups to the school with local heroes James Skehill and Damien Joyce.

After Galway's fantastic year in sport, winning the senior and minor all - Ireland hurling competitions, the children of Kilrickle were eager to get their hands on the trophies, particularly the Liam MacCarthy which had eluded the county for so long.

Damien and James spoke to us about winning the trophies and took time to take pictures and sign jerseys, hurleys and sliotars to name but a few.

Both men were extremely kind to us and it was an absolute pleasure to have them come to our school, taking time out of their hectic schedules with both players having represented their club and county with distinction.

May their visit fuel the ambitions and motivations of the next generation of hurling and camóige players in our school.
Míle Buíochas daoibh!

Baboró International Arts Festival for Children

The children of Kilrickle National School experienced Baboró; an international arts festival for children, which took place in theatres all around Galway this week.

Junior & Senior Infants along with First Class went to An Taibhdhearc Theatre in Galway City to see 'What Does Red Do On Thursday', while Second to Sixth Class went to watch 'They Called Her Vivaldi' presented in the Town Hall Theatre, also in the city.

Despite the rainy conditions it didn't put a dampener on the day's experience for the pupils as Baboró while very entertaining also opens the imagination of children and inspires them to see beyond conventional performances we are used to seeing today.

For more information on the shows please click on their names.

Art Work inspired by Pablo Picasso

Here is artwork that the senior room completed based on the famous artist Pablo Picasso.
He invented and developed "Cubism"; a modern painting technique.
These paintings are based on Picasso's Red and Blue works.

Cycling Training

Cycling Trying took place last Friday for children from first to sixth class. We began with practicing safe cycling techniques and skills on he tennis court followed by learning and revising the rules of the road for cyclists in the classroom. Afterwards, third to sixth class got the opportunity to cycle on the road. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't great but cyclists were rewarded with hot chocolate afterwards to warm back up. Thanks to Sean and Eddie who were our instructors for the day and to Ms. Hardiman for organising the day.

Our Trip to Coole Park

Last Thursday, thanks to Ms. Hardiman we visited Coole Park outside Gort as part of our Green school's programme for this year concerning Biodiversity. To find out more about Coole Park please click on the following link: http://www.coolepark.ie/visitor-centre.

A Beech tree's bark is soft and smooth so it's easy to identify.

Fungus and insects are nature's recyclers. They break down dead material
which can then be used to feed living plants and animals.

Mushrooms are a type of fungus.

Off on our nature hunt.

One of our nature hunt groups with their findings.

Oak leaves, like the ones found on our oak tree inside our schools's front gate.

The park ranger even let us peek at the badger's sett (a badger's home). We had to be really quite.
Badgers are nocturnal creatures so they we all asleep. There are eleven setts in total in this one area.

Here's a badger's sett up close.

How many people did it take to get around the bough of this tree?
